Byzantine Liturgical Theology of Great and Holy Week Lazarus Saturday BYZANTINE LITURGICAL THEOLOGY OF GREAT & HOLY WEEK: LAZARUS SATURDAY
The Feast commemorates the miracle of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ when He raised his friend Lazarus from the dead after he had lain in the grave four days. The effects of this miracle were immediate: it caused many of the Jews to put their faith in the Jesus, and it led to the decision of the Sanhedrin to have him killed. At Divine Liturgy, we first hear the Troparion of Lazarus Saturday, which will be repeated on Palm Sunday: “Christ our God, before your passion you confirmed our common resurrection when you raised Lazarus from the dead. Therefore, like the children we carry the symbols of victory and cry out to you, the Victor over Death: Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
