On August 29th we commemorate the Beheading of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist, John. The feast commemorates the martyrdom and mourning of John the Baptist. Because John had denounced Herod Antipas for putting away his own wife and marrying the wife of his brother Philip, Herod imprisoned John. At a feast in honor of Herod’s birthday, his stepdaughter Salome danced for him. Herod promised Salome anything; thus her mother, Herodias, told her to ask for the head of John on a platter. The Gospel reading is Mk 6:14-29, which recounts the death/beheading of John the Baptist. This is a day of Strict Fast until Sundown, Thursday 29 August. Traditionally, nothing is eaten which is naturally spherical or round in form, and nothing is served on a plate or platter. The final day of the feast is August 30th.
