The Gospel Reading is Matthew 14:14-22, The Feeding of the 5000.  The story concerns Christ’s feeding five thousand with five loaves and two fishes. Breaking bread together is a communal and sacramental act that we hear through the scriptures. Sharing a meal is a primary means of creating and maintaining community. When Christians gather to break bread together, we remember and repeat Jesus’ words and actions. In this sacred meal Christ satisfies our deepest hungers, heals our brokenness, binds us together as if one body, and strengthens us for service in the world.

Today is the Pre-festive Day of Procession of the Holy Cross. According to Orthodox Wiki: “It became a tradition to carry the wood of the Venerable Cross through the streets of Constantinople for the sanctification of the city starting in the beginning of August. This was done because illnesses were more common in August at that time. On the eve of the feast, it was taken out of the imperial treasury, and laid upon the altar of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia. From this Feast until the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, they carried the relic of the Cross, throughout the city in procession, offering it to the people to venterate.”
