The Gospel Reading is Matthew 14:14-22, The Feeding of the 5000. The story concerns Christ’s feeding five thousand with five loaves and two fishes. Breaking bread together is a communal and sacramental act that we hear through the scriptures. Sharing a meal is a primary means of creating and maintaining community. When Christians gather to break bread together, we remember and repeat Jesus’ words and actions. In this sacred meal Christ satisfies our deepest hungers, heals our brokenness, binds us together as if one body, and strengthens us for service in the world.
On this day we may commemorate the Feast of our Blessed Father and Confessor Basil Hopko, which may be observed today, the day of his passing. The following pamphet entitled: Bishop Basil Hopko Our “Prisoner For The Lord” is from the Byzantine Archeparchy of Pittsburgh explaining his importance: https://archpitt.org/bishop-basil-hopko-our-prisoner-for-the-lord/
