OUR JOURNEY TO PASCHA 2024: https://stjosaphateparchy.com/our-journey-to-pascha-2024/

Today’s gospel, Matthew 25:31-46, is The Parable of the Sheep and Goats.  All those on earth will be brought before the Lord, and He will separate them “as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.” We see man and woman redeemed and saved, and man and woman condemned and lost. Therefore, salvation is the result of good works. The “sheep” acted charitably, giving food, drink, and clothing to the needy. The “goats” showed no charity. This seems to result in salvation for the sheep and damnation for the goats. The core message is that we as followers of Christ, will treat others with kindness, serving them as if they were serving Christ Himself. Though, the “goats” can perform acts of kindness and charity, their hearts are not right with God, and their actions are not for the right purpose – to honor and worship God.

“Preparation for the Great Fast

As noted during the last three weeks, the season of the Great Fast is preceded by liturgical preparation.  We are now one Sunday before the Great Fasts beginning, during which we prepare themselves for abstinence, prayer, and repentance. We are again reminded of our need for a “Lenten springime”, and of the spiritual pitfalls that can divert us from our goal of communion with God. This fourth Sunday before the Great Fast, is the Sunday of the Last Judgment or Sunday of Meat-fare. At Divine Liturgy we hear the Gospel account of the second coming of the Lord in glory, and of the final judgment. To prepare us for the rigors of the Fast, the Church’s traditional fasting rules call on the faithful to fast from flesh-meats for the final week before the Fast.  Thus, this week is called Cheesefare Week.”  From the Metropolitan Cantor Institute, Byzantine Eparchy of Pittsburgh – https://mci.archpitt.org/liturgy/Great_Fast.html
