JULY 11: COMMEMORATION OF BENEDICTINES, OUR VENERABLE FATHER BENEDICT

On this day, we commemorate St. Benedict.  St. Benedict, also called Saint Benedict of Nursia, and the founder of the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino and was the father of Western monasticism.  He established the norm for monastic living throughout Europe. Pope Paul VI proclaimed him the patron saint of all Europe in 1964. St. Benedict wrote the Rule for monasteries. which was and is still used in many monasteries and convents around the world. He was viewed as a monastic leader, not a scholar. The Rule was the sole example of Benedict’s writing, but it reflects the best of the monastic tradition and was passed on to the European West.
