MAR 20: COMMEMORATION OF THE VENERABLE FATHERS OF THE ST. SABBAS MONASTERY – PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY

MAR 20: PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY – 6:00 PM. Note: Confession available before and after Liturgy.

We commemorate the Venerable Fathers of the St. Sabbas Monastery today. The St. Sabbas Monastery was broken into on March 13, 796 by the Saracens and demanded valuables. When they learned nothing of value available except old clothing and meager food, the Saracens shot arrows at the monks and set the Monastery afire. Thirteen monks were killed and many wounded. The Saracens fled after seeing what they thought was an army from Jerusalem. Instead, a throng of people and a physician came to help those who survived, while the Saracens fled.

(NOTE: PreSanctified Liturgy books are in the church).

The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated during the Great Fast, and provides the faithful with the opportunity to receive Holy Communion on those days when the Eucharistic Sacrifice is not celebrated.   The word “presanctified” indicates that the “gifts” (the Body and Blood of Christ) which are distributed at the service are those consecrated at a previous Eucharist.
