MAR 6: COMMEMORATION OF THE 42 MARTYRS OF AMMORIUM: PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY

MAR 6: PRESANCTITIED LITURGY – 6:00 PM. Note: Confession offered before and after Liturgy.

The Holy 42 Martyrs of Amorium, were Passion-bearers, or those who would face their death in a Christ-like manner. Those remembered this day are Constantine, Aetius, Theophilus, Theodore, Melissenus, Callistus, Basoes and 35 others, who with them, were important officers of the Byzantine city of Amorium. Amorium was one of Byzantium’s largest and most important cities at the time. They were seized following the capture and orderly destruction of the city in 838 AD by the Abbasid caliph AlMutasim. They were then taken as hostages to Samarra (Iraq today) and executed there 7 years later for refusing to convert to Islam.

(NOTE: PreSanctified Liturgy books are in the church).

The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated during the Great Fast, and provides the faithful with the opportunity to receive Holy Communion on those days when the Eucharistic Sacrifice is not celebrated.   The word “presanctified” indicates that the “gifts” (the Body and Blood of Christ) which are distributed at the service are those consecrated at a previous Eucharist.
