MAR 26: MID-LENT, LEAVE-TAKING OF ANNUNCIATION, AND SYNAXIS OF THE ARCHANGEL GABRIEL

candles-cross1 MAR 26: CONFESSION – 4:00 – 5:30 PM; PRESANCTIFIED LITURGY – 6:00 PM (LIVE-STREAMED ON FACEBOOK).

We are at the mid-point in our Lenten devotion. Therefore, be joyful, refreshed and reassured, we begin the second part of the Great Fast with continued fasting, prayer, forgiveness and good deeds.

NOTE: Today we also commemorate the Archangel Gabriel. On March 26th, the day after the Feast of the Annunciation, we commemorate the Lord’s messenger Gabriel.  Gabriel’s name means “hero of God.” As a hero for God, Gabriel is remembered best for being the angel who announced to Mary that she would be the mother of God’s only Son.  Thus, we remember Gabriel to help guide us in our journey to everlasting life with our Father and we can ask Gabriel to help us say “yes” to God as Mary did so many years ago.

The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated during the Great Fast, and provides the faithful with the opportunity to receive Holy Communion on those days when the Eucharistic Sacrifice is not celebrated.   The word “presanctified” indicates that the “gifts” (the Body and Blood of Christ) which are distributed at the service are those consecrated at a previous Eucharist.
