MAY 21: FEAST OF THE HOLY EMPEROR CONSTANTINE AND HIS MOTHER, HELEN – EQUALS TO THE APOSTLES

On May 21st we celebrate the Feast of Emperor Constantine and his mother, Helen, Equals to the Apostles.  St. Constantine is the first Roman Emperor to support Christianity as a replacement for Roman paganism and is attributed for the conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity.  St. Helena, his mother, built many Holy Christian temples and monasteries among which the most important are: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem and the Church of Nazareth.

Also, the Gospel reading on this feast day is John 10:1-9, The Good Shepherd and His Sheep. In this reading, Jesus teaches us that He is the Good Shepherd and He would lay down His life for us, His sheep or followers. Thus our belief in Christ will ensure we are safe and secure from sin and damnation and , thus “saved”.
