This day commemorates the 318 God-bearing Fathers who gathered in Nicaea in 325 at the request of the Emperor, Saint Constantine the Great, to address the heresy of Arianism together with other issues that concerned the unity of the Church.

The Gospel Reading is from John 17:1-13, which is often called the pontifical prayer of Christ. Jesus encouraged the disciples to face bravely the coming tribulations and He raised their spirits through prayer.  Jesus prays for us because He knows how difficult it will be for us to keep our faith and avoid temptation. By praying, He teaches us that when temptations overtake us, we should put everything else aside and look to God.
