MAY 12, 13, 15 & 16: SUNDAY OF THE FATHERS OF THE 1ST ECUMENICAL COUNCIL (7TH PASCHAL SUNDAY) & MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION

 holy_fathers2MAY 12: VIGIL DIVINE LITURGY – 4:00 PM; MAY 13: JOINT TYPIKA – 10:00 AM; MAY 15: DIVINE LITURGY & CATECHISM – 11:00 AM; MAY 16: DIVINE LITURGY – 6:00 PM.

This day commemorates the 318 God-bearing Fathers who gathered in Nicaea in 325 at the request of the Emperor, Saint Constantine the Great, to address the heresy of Arianism together with other issues that concerned the unity of the Church.

On May 13th we also commemorate all our mothers (birth, adoptive, role-models, mother figures). Mother’s Day gives us all a chance to really think about what your own mother or mother figure means to you, or what being a “mother” brings to our lives.

The Gospel Reading is from John 17:1-13, which is often called the pontifical prayer of Christ. Jesus encouraged the disciples to face bravely the coming tribulations and He raised their spirits through prayer.  Jesus prays for us because He knows how difficult it will be for us to keep our faith and avoid temptation. By praying, He teaches us that when temptations assail us we should put everything else aside and look to God.
