Today we commemorate Matthew the Apostle, also known as Saint Matthew. He was one of the 12 Apostle of Jesus and author of the Gospel of Matthew. Initially a tax collector and despised by the public. Jesus first saw Matthew at his customs post and said to him, “Follow me.” Matthew was immediately obedient and abandoned his position and became one of Jesus’ disciples. Many in the community were critical of Jesus associating and dining with Matthew, but when asked Jesus replied: “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” – Matthew 9:10-13. As a follower, Matthew, also witnessed the Ascension of Jesus. Matthew preached the Gospel in Judea before going to other countries.
