There are two Gospel Readings today. The first reading is Luke 8: 41-56 and the 2nd reading is Luke 10: 16-22. The first Gospel reading, Luke 8:41-56, we read and hear about Christ healing the hemorrhaging woman and healing a young child. Important to note in these stories, that thoughts are a means of communication with God, and the faith of the women and the father healed their desperate needs for their family members. The hemorrhaging woman was healed because she thought, ‘If I can but touch the hem of his garment, I shall be healed.’  Her faith so strong even in thought! Jairus, a synagogue leader, was desperate because his only child was dying. His love for his child overshadowed his leadership role and his concern for himself, because his belief was so strong!

You can find a summary of the 2nd Gospel Reading, Luke 10: 16-22, in the post about today’s Feast Day for the Archangel Michael and all Angels.

NOTE: Michaelmas, or The Feast of Michael and All Angels, is a Solemn Holy Day, celebrated each year on November 8th. It signifies the end of the harvest, the start of autumn, and the beginning of the shorter days. This year we will have a Vesperal Divine Liturgy on November 7th, and our annual Michaelmas Celebration, after the Divine Liturgy today. Come celebrate the Feast of St. Michael and all the Holy Angels. Each year, our custom in the parish, was to always have a “feast” as they did during the Middle Ages. Traditional foods include meats, sides, fall fruits, anything “deviled”, and blackberries (since the devil fell in a blackberry bush when he was thrown from Heaven!). It also provided a good opportunity for everyone to learn about the Middle Ages time period, including the rise of religious orders and the Church during medieval history.
