Today we celebrate the holy archangel Michael (which is celebrated in the Byzantine Catholic Church each year on November 8th) and all the angelic powers (“bodiless powers”). We recognize that God created the angels in advance of human beings, and that they have their own place in the divine plan. They serve as God’s messengers; help to protect us from evil; and intercede before God. We celebrate the Feast of St. Michael with “thanksgiving-like” foods. Also, known as Michaelmas, or The Feast of Michael and All Angels, which signifies the end of the harvest, the start of autumn and the beginning of the shorter days.
The Gospel reading is Luke 10:16-22. We read “Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me. And those who reject me reject the one who has sent me”. Thus, the disciples identify themselves with Jesus in the total gift and in this gift is realized their encounter with God, and God allows himself to be found by those who seek him through Jesus.
