SEPT 26: COMMEMORATION OF THE PASSING OF JOHN APOSTLE – EVANGELIST

On September 26th we also commemorate the repose of John Apostle – Evangelist. After his calling, the Apostle John did not part from the Lord, and he was one of the three apostles who were particularly close to Him. St John is known as a witness to the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor. During the Last Supper, he reclined next to the Lord, and laid his head upon His chest. He also asked the name of Jesus’ betrayer. He followed after the Lord when they led Him bound from the Garden of Gethsemane to the court of High Priests. He was there in the courtyard of the High Priest during the interrogations of Jesus and he resolutely followed after him on the way to Golgotha. At the foot of the Cross he stood with the Theotokos. He served Her until Her Dormition. He wrote the Gospel which bears his name, 3 Epistles and the Book of Revelation as part of the New Testament. He was a leader of the early church in Jerusalem.

The Gospel Reading on his feast day is John 19: 25-27 & 21:24-25 which is the following:
