NOTE: Today, Nathaniel McCallum, will continue the education series on the Old Testament after the 9 AM Divine Liturgy! Title: What is the Gospel? A Theological Journey Through the Old Testament. Everyone has an opinion about the scriptures. For some, they are a collection of Iron Age myths or an outdated legal system. For others, they form the basis of monotheism, sometimes with Jesus “bolted on” at the end. When correcting the gnostics, St Irenaeus accused them of having the wrong “hypothesis” of the scriptures. But what is that hypothesis? What is the apostolic deposit? This course, open to teens and adults, will seek to answer this question by probing the structure of the Old Testament. We will use faithful modern scholarship and new archeological discoveries to shine a light on precisely what the apostles taught and why the Catholic reading of scripture is faithful to their vision. Bring a copy of the scriptures and your curiosity!

We have two Gospel Readings today. The first is Luke 5: 1-11, which is summarized below. The second Gospel reading is Luke 6: 17-23, which is in commemoration of Our Venerable Father Chariton. Please see next post for Gospel reading for this feast day.
The first Gospel reading, Luke 5: 1-11, is about the Four Fishermen Called as Disciples. In this reading, Christ comes upon several men, Sts. Peter, Andrew, James, and John who, the Gospel says, had been fishing all through the night and had caught nothing. After spending some time teaching His message, Christ turned his attention to the fishermen. At the Lord’s request, the fisherman returned to their boats, and with faith in Christ’s words, let out their nets again. This time, they caught many fish, which could break the net, fill two boats, and nearly sink them. After Peter saw this miracle, he confessed to Jesus, he was a sinful man. Christ tells him that though they now catch fish, soon they shall be catching people. Christ taught them 2 messages: 1. to put their trust in Him, even when they thought it foolish or when they thought they knew better, and 2. though we try to accomplish certain things in our lives, and fail, we must never stop trying, we must never give up.
