AUG 5 & 6: TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD (9TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST)

transfiguration_610x300 AUG 5: VESPERS & BLESSING OF FRUIT – 3:00 PM; AUG 6: MATINS – 7:00 AM, DIVINE LITURGY & BLESSING OF FRUIT – 10:30 AM.

Feast of the Transfiguration (Day of Blessing of Fruit) – The Gospel reading today is Matthew 17:1-9, which recounts the Transfiguration in which Jesus becomes radiant in glory before the Apostles Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor. It is a special moment for them, as Peter confirms – ‘it is good for us to be here’. Also appearing next to Jesus and whom Jesus speaks to are the prophets Moses and Elijah as well as God from the heavens who called Jesus “Son.”  Thus, the feast commemorates this event. The blessing of grapes, as well as other fruits and vegetables on this day is the most beautiful and adequate sign of the final transfiguration of all things in Christ. It signifies the ultimate flowering and fruitfulness of all creation in God’s Paradise where all will be transformed by the glory of the Lord.
