JULY 19 & 20: FEAST OF ELIJAH – GREAT PROPHET (SIMPLE HOLY DAY)

s_elijahlarge JULY 19: GREAT VESPERS & BLESSING OF WHEELED TRANSPORTATION – 6:00 PM (ST. N); JULY 20: DIVINE LITURGY & BLESSING OF WHEELED TRANSPORTATION – 6:30 PM (ST. C & M).

This day commemorates the holy prophet Elijah who was taken into heaven on a fiery chariot and who was reading scripture while in his chariot. The glorious prophet Elias is therefore known as the patron saint of vehicles, reminding us that we must struggle to manifest holiness in our lives, especially when we travel.

Elijah, meaning “My God is Yahweh” was a prophet and a wonder-worker in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Ahab (9th century BC), according to the Biblical Books of Kings. According to the Books of Kings, Elijah defended the worship of Yahweh over that of the Canaanite god Baal (which was considered as idol worship); he raised the dead, brought fire down from the sky, and was taken up in a whirlwind (accompanied by a chariot and horses of flame or riding in it).
