MAR 19: 3RD SUNDAY OF THE GREAT FAST – VENERATION OF THE CROSS

MAR 19 – MATINS: 7:00 AM, DIVINE LITURGY, PROCESSION: 10:00 AM, SPANISH LITURGY: 1:00 PM.

The Gospel today is Mark 8: 34 – 9:1, Take Up the Cross and Follow Him and which Mark’s message is clear …… “The Lord said, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.” The path of Jesus’ isn’t easy. You will find that some people do not like you because of your goodness. Jesus taught us to serve one another and not be selfish.  This will be a difficult path to follow, but when you follow Him, He will always be with you to help you and one day you will be with Him in Heaven because you followed Him.

On the Third Sunday of Great and Holy Lent, the Church commemorates the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The liturgy includes a special veneration of the Cross, which prepares the faithful for the commemoration of the Crucifixion during Holy Week. The Church placed this event in the middle of Great Lent in order that the recollection of the suffering and death of the Lord might inspire and strengthen those fasting for the remainder of the of the fast. The Holy Cross remains out for veneration throughout the week until Friday, when, after the hours and before the beginning of the Presanctfied Liturgy, it is returned to the Altar.
