The Gospel Reading is from John 17:1-13, which is often called the pontifical prayer of Christ. Jesus encouraged the disciples to face bravely the coming tribulations and He raised their spirits through prayer. Jesus prays for us because He knows how difficult it will be for us to keep our faith and avoid temptation. By praying, He teaches us that when temptations assail us we should put everything else aside and look to God.
