APRIL 3: GREAT AND HOLY SATURDAY & VESPERS WITH DIVINE LITURGY (BLESSING YOUR PASCHA BASKET AT HOME)

JERUSALEM MATINS: 8:00 AM; VIGIL WITH DIVINE LITURGY & BLESSING OF PASCHA BASKETS: 4:00 PM.

On Holy Saturday we hear the Gospel Matthew 28: 1-20. The faithful women visit Jesus’ tomb and an angel invites them to see the place where Jesus had been laid. They are told to tell Jesus’ disciples that He is risen. As they leave the area they encounter the risen Jesus. The guards, who were incapacitated by the angel, report to the chief priests about the incident and the priests bribe the guards to lie about what happened.

If you would like to bless your Pascha Basket at home with your Blessed Holy Water, “the Paschal Matins book contains versions of the blessings of Paschal foods which may be prayed by any Christian. While not a priestly blessing, it reminds us that all Christians are empowered by their baptism to bless and thank God for all he has done for us.” You can find the blessing here: BLESSING OF PASCHA BASKETDoc2

The following is from the Melkite Greek-Catholic Eparchy of Newton, Office of Educational Services, which you may want to share with your family each week of the Great Fast: “Living with Christ – Great Lent at Home.” Bright Week: GreatLentAtHomeBrightWeek

Bright Week is the first week following the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and ends the following Sunday, the Sunday of St. Thomas. For all Eastern Christians Bright Week begins a period of celebration that continues for 50 days until Pentecost.

This celebration includes the practice of the faithful joyously greeting each other with the salutation of Christ is Risen, followed by the response, Indeed He is Risen! The services of Bright Week are done with the Royal Doors fully open. This unblocked view of that altar symbolizes the open door of Christ’s empty tomb as well as the rent veil of the Jewish Temple, which was torn apart at the moment Christ died. Fasting is prohibited by Eastern Christians during the week.
